Section 179 and Your Business Vehicle
If your business needs a truck, van, or SUV, Section 179 of the federal tax code may let you deduct the cost of that vehicle in the year you buy it rather than writing it off a little at a time over several years.
That is the whole idea in one sentence. The details depend on your business, your vehicle, and your tax situation, and your accountant is the one who confirms what you qualify for. What we can do is get you into the right vehicle quickly, before the year closes.
Because that is the part that catches people out. A Section 179 deduction generally requires the vehicle to be purchased and placed in service by December 31. Finding the right truck in the last week of December is not a plan.
Tell us what you need and our small business concierge will take it from there.
Why we built a small business concierge
Buying a work vehicle is not the same as buying a family car, and being handed the same process is frustrating when your situation is different.
You already know what you need. You are working against a deadline that is not negotiable. You cannot spend three afternoons at a dealership while your crew waits or your fields do. And your questions are specific: payload ratings, upfit lead times, whether the configuration you need is actually obtainable before year-end, and yes, color, because a truck that has to match the rest of your fleet or carry your branding is a requirement rather than a preference.
Our small business concierge is one point of contact who handles that directly. Tell us the vehicle and the timeline, and we will tell you plainly what is on the ground, what can be ordered, and whether it can realistically be delivered and placed in service before December 31.
We can also handle the paperwork your side requires. Plenty of businesses cannot simply buy a truck. Procurement rules, ownership approval, or a board may require a formal Request for Quote or Request for Proposal before anything moves, and those documents have to be produced in the format your process expects. Our concierge works through that with you rather than leaving you to translate a sales quote into something your controller will accept. Tell us what your purchasing process needs and we will put it together.
Time is money in your business. We would rather give you a straight answer in a day than a sales process over three weeks.
Who we work with
Farm and ranch operations
Southeast Missouri runs on agriculture, and a farm truck has to earn its keep every day of the year. Whether you are hauling equipment, pulling a stock trailer, or running the operation from the cab, we understand that a truck is working capital rather than a purchase.
Construction and contracting
Job site trucks get used hard. You need the right payload and towing ratings, the right bed and cab configuration, and often an upfit on top. Lead times matter here more than anywhere, which is exactly why starting early is the difference between deducting this year and deducting next year.
Landscaping and outdoor services
Trailers, crews, equipment, and a season that does not wait. The right combination of towing capacity and crew seating is worth getting right rather than settling for what happens to be on the lot.
Business owners and executives
If your vehicle carries clients as often as cargo, the conversation is different. You want something comfortable on a long drive to a meeting that still qualifies as a business vehicle. That is a real category and we treat it as one.
How Section 179 works, in plain language
Section 179 allows qualifying businesses to deduct the cost of qualifying equipment, including certain business-use vehicles, in the year the equipment is purchased and placed in service, rather than depreciating it across multiple years.
A few things generally determine whether a vehicle qualifies and how much of the cost can be deducted:
- Business use. The vehicle generally must be used more than fifty percent for business purposes, and the deduction is typically based on the business-use percentage.
- Timing. The vehicle generally must be both purchased and placed in service during the tax year you are claiming.
- Vehicle weight and type. The tax code treats vehicles differently depending on gross vehicle weight rating and body type. Heavier trucks and vans are generally treated more favorably than passenger vehicles, and many Ford trucks and vans exceed the relevant weight thresholds. Confirm the rating for the specific configuration you are considering.
- Annual limits. Deduction limits, total spending caps, and vehicle-specific thresholds are set annually and change from year to year. Your tax professional will have the current figures for the year you are filing.
- Business income. The deduction is generally limited by your business taxable income, which is another reason to have this conversation with your accountant rather than estimating.
Bonus depreciation is a separate provision that can apply alongside or instead of Section 179 depending on your situation. The two interact, and which combination works best is a question for your tax advisor.
This is not tax advice. This page is general information, not tax, legal, or accounting advice. Section 179 and bonus depreciation rules, deduction limits, spending caps, vehicle weight thresholds, business-use requirements, and eligibility all change from year to year and depend on your business structure and how the vehicle is used, so consult your tax professional about your situation and refer to IRS guidance for current-year figures. We sell vehicles. Your accountant tells you what you qualify for. What we can do is make sure the vehicle side does not become the reason you miss the window.
Ford vehicles our business customers ask about most

Ford F-150
The light-duty workhorse, and the right answer for a large share of small businesses that need capability without stepping up to a heavy-duty chassis.
Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty
When the trailer is heavier, the payload is real, or the job demands a truck rated for sustained work rather than occasional towing.
Ford Transit
Enclosed, configurable cargo space for mobile trades, delivery operations, and any business that needs to carry tools and inventory securely.
Ford Expedition
For business owners who carry clients and crew, with three rows and towing capability in a vehicle that is comfortable on a long drive to a meeting.
Towing and payload capacities and gross vehicle weight ratings vary by cab, bed, drivetrain, axle ratio, powertrain, and equipment, so confirm the ratings for the specific configuration you are considering.
Not sure which fits? That is exactly what the concierge is for. Tell us what the vehicle has to do and we will narrow it down with you.
One note on timing, because it matters more here than anywhere else on this page. Heavier chassis and upfitted trucks carry longer lead times than a truck sitting on the lot, and a body build adds time on top of the chassis itself. Vehicle availability, factory order lead times, and upfit timing all vary, so delivery by any specific date is not guaranteed. That is a reason to start the conversation early rather than a reason to wait. Tell us your target date and we will tell you straight whether it works and what the fastest path to it looks like.
What happens after you submit the form
One of our team reaches out directly. We will ask what the vehicle needs to do, what your timeline looks like, and whether an upfit is involved.
From there we will tell you what is in stock, what can be ordered and when it would realistically arrive, and what the path looks like to having it delivered and in service before the end of the year. If we cannot get you there in time, we will say so rather than let you find out in December.
You can also contact our team directly, or come see us at 2637 Veterans Memorial Drive in Cape Girardeau.
Start the conversation now, not in December
The deduction has a deadline. The vehicle has a lead time. Those two facts are the entire reason to start this in the fall rather than the last week of the year.
Fill out the form and our small business concierge at Ford Groves will get back to you with real answers about what is available and what is possible on your timeline.
